Wendy Holden - The Teacher of Auschwitz
The Teacher of Auschwitz is inspired by the true story of the young German Jew Fredy Hirsch who persuaded the SS to let him establish children’s homes in the Terezin ghetto and then a dedicated children’s block in the heart of Auschwitz. In the shadow of the chimneys, Fredy had the walls painted with Disney characters, taught songs and poems, and helped the children stage little plays that the SS watched, moist-eyed.

Never before told in detail, Fredy’s is an incredible story to be published in 20 countries and is a UK bestseller. It’s also the first book that describes what it was like for a gay man caught up in the Holocaust.
Dita Kraus, one of the last living survivors of the Auschwitz children’s block and someone who knew Fredy as a child, said: “This is the closest possible narrative a person who did not experience those times herself, could have written... which will do justice to Fredy and all those victims."
